The amazing walls have preserved the historical city centre almost identical to its original appearance, with its many precious architectural trasures, such as the numerous spectacular medieval churches, towers, campanili (bell towers), and magnificent Renaissance palaces of great beauty and elegance. Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is worthy to be seen for its unique architecture. Lucca is called "La citt� delle 100 chiese" (The town of 100 churches) and, like other tuscan towns, it has many works of art and looks like an open air museum. Some particular events in Lucca are: the traditional Palio della balestra which takes place every year, the night of the 12th of July, for the Patron's day. This event follows the 1443 policy, the most ancient in Europe. In September, between the walls of Lucca, another event takes place: the medieval fair of Santa Croce.
