Siena, declared world heritage by UNESCO, is universally known for its artistic heritage and the substantial stylistic unity of its mediaeval town plan. On 2nd July and 16th August the traditional Palio is held in Piazza del Campo, a horserace in which the various contrade or city districts compete. It monopolises the city's attention for days and days: this because the Palio is not just a historical event or the reconstruction of a mediaeval joust but rather the expression of a very old and deeply rooted Siena tradition. The Palio is far from being an event that can be passed off in "just a few days". It is the result of attentive and maniacal organisation by the contrade, which are involved in an intense social and interactive life all the year round.
