Pisa is a Tuscan municipality and the capital of the province that bears its name. It can boast the Region's most important airport, "Galileo Galilei", and no less than three universities. Among the city's most important monuments - in the celebrated Piazza dei Miracoli which has been declared world heritage - is the Romanesque marble cathedral built between 1064 and 1118. The bronze portals are the work of Bonanno Pisano and the pulpit is by Giovanni Pisano. The famous 12th century Leaning Tower, which took on its slant shortly after building began, rises 55 metres above the piazza. There are at least three leaning towers: the most famous is in Piazza dei Miracoli, near the northern end of Via Santa Maria, next to the Duomo; the second is the bell tower of the Church of San Nicola, at the opposite end of Via Santa Maria, near the Lungarno; the third, halfway down the Piagge embankment in the eastern part of the city, is the bell tower of the Church of San Michele degli Scalzi (in this case the church too is leaning).
