Farmhouse Podere il Pino surroundings: Lucca
Lucca is one of the few towns whose 15th - 17th century walls (about 4.45 kilometres) are still intact. The old town centre is well preserved. Numerous mediaeval churches of considerable architectural richness stand among towers, campaniles and renaissance palazzos of precious stylistic linearity. The piazza of the amphitheatre, built by the architect Nottolini on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre, is unique in its architectonic genre. Lucca has also been nicknamed "The City of a Hundred Churches". In common with other Tuscan cities Lucca is full of works of art, like an open air museum, carefully constructed and enriched over the centuries, where the new building harmonise with the old. The piazza of the amphitheatre is an excellent example of this continual upgrading, as are Piazza Napoleone, dating to the reign of princess Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, and the public park created atop and around the city walls.
